Used as a UV absorber for the protection of surfaces against discoloration and degradation under ultraviolet/sunlight, UV-328 (2-(2H-benzotriazol-2-yl)-4-6-ditertpentylphenol) substance has a wide range of uses, including but not limited to:

    • Automotive industry
    • Liquid crystal panels and meters mounted on vehicles
    • Paints, coatings and sealants
    • Plastics, including in the non-food contact layer of food packaging
    • Printing inks and adhesives in food packaging
    • Resin for interior and exterior parts of vehicles

The four-week consultation, beginning July 30, 2024, follows the addition of UV-328 with specific exemptions to Annexe A (elimination) of the Stockholm Convention (SC-11/11) in May 2023. The EU has also consulted over its proposed listing of dechlorane plus and methoxychlor in the POP Recast Regulation.

If approved, the new law will become effective from February 26, 2025

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulations that may impact their business. SafeGuardS 123.24 provides a helpful table detailing the scope, specific exemptions and the proposed date of applicability for this new POP listing.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 123.24 for more details.
