SGS Summarizes EPA Proposals to Ban 1-Bromopropane in Most Consumer Uses

(1888PressRelease) September 04, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has highlighted the USA’s proposed ban of 1-Bromopropane in most consumer uses.

1-Bromopropane is used widely in consumer cleaning and degreasing products as well as automotive care products and insulation. Exposure to the chemical has been found to cause serious health effects from cancer to liver, kidney and nervous system damage and reduced fertility.

The US Environmental Protection Agency announced a list of the first ten chemicals for risk assessment and mitigation under its amended Toxic Substances Act (TSCA) in November 2016. Rules have already been proposed for carbon tetrachloride, N-methylpyrrolidone, perchloroethylene and trichloroethylene (SG 96/24, SG 76/23, SG 154/23), and finalized for asbestos and methylene chloride (SG 77/24).

A de minimis level for formulations has not been included in the proposal, unlike other EPA draft or finalized rules on solvents. Workplace requirements in most industrial and commercial uses are specified. September 23, 2024, is the deadline for comments on the proposal.
