  • (1888PressRelease) July 13, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 100.24 to provide stakeholders with an overview of Canada’s SOR/2024-109 Regulations Amending the Products Containing Mercury Regulation, which are intended to reduce the potential risks of mercury to the environment and human health.

This new legislation amends SOR/2014-254 and was published in the Canada Gazette, Part II, Volume 158, Number 13, on June 19, 2024. It aims to fulfill Canada’s international commitments under the Minamata Convention and supports Canada’s National Strategy for Lamps Containing Mercury by phasing out mercury containing products and replacing them with light-emitting diode (LED) lamps.

Essential products that continue to have limited exemptions include:
    • Encapsulated dental amalgam
    • Analytical standards, reagents or reference materials for use in laboratories
    • Fluorescent lamps used for growing plants, water treatment or air disinfection

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that will impact their ability to operate. SafeGuardS 100.24 provides a useful summary of the provisions in SOR/2024-109.

Stakeholders should be aware the requirements in SOR/2024-109 will come into force on June 19, 2025.
