  • (1888PressRelease) October 04, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 121.23 to summarize Australia’s intention to regulate four persistent organic pollutants (POP).

    The four POP chemicals are:
    • Pentachlorobenzene (PeCB)
    • Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), its salts and PFOA-related compounds
    • Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), its salts, perfluorooctane sulfonyl fluoride (PFOS-F) and PFOS-related compounds
    • Perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), its salts and PFHxS-related compounds

The scope of the proposed ban includes substances, mixtures and articles containing the four chemicals and Class B firefighting foams, when already installed in both mobile and fixed systems.

The Australian Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW) announced the proposal via the World Trade Organization (WTO) in August 2023. The proposal is expected to be adopted on December 31, 2023. It will then be implemented in phases from July 2024.

SGS SafeGuardS 121.23 includes a table detailing the requirements in the proposal and potential effective dates.

Stakeholders should review SGS’s original SafeGuardS 121.23 for more information.
