  • (1888PressRelease) June 12, 2018 - Manufacturers of cables used in construction are reminded that they must now be CE certified and bear the CE mark before they can be used in the European Union (EU).

The EU’s new Construction Products Regulations (CPR) came into force on July 1, 2017. From this date it has been mandatory for all new installations to comply with the CPR. This became mandatory for all new installations after July 1, 2017, meaning all wire and cable products must have CE certification and show the CE mark. To achieve this, they must be tested and certificated by an EU Notified Body based on system 1+ or system 3.

This requirement was first entered into the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) on July 1, 2016. The OJEU entry includes standard EN 50575 – Power, control and communication cables – Cables for general applications in construction works subject to reaction to fire requirements. This is the standard cabling must meet to achieve a CE mark for certain fire performance categories.

In addition, there are several supporting standards:

    • EN 13501-6, Fire classification of construction products and building elements:
o Part 6: Classification using data from reaction to fire tests on electric cables EN 50399, Common test methods for cables under fire conditions
o Heat release and smoke production measurement on cables during flame spread test — Test apparatus, procedures, results

    • EN 60332-1-2, Tests on electric and optical fiber cables under fire conditions:
o Part 1-2: Test for vertical flame propagation for a single insulated wire or cable — Procedure for 1 kW pre-mixed flame (IEC 60332-1-2)

    • EN 60754-2, Test on gases evolved during combustion of materials from cables:
o Part 2: Determination of acidity (by pH measurement) and conductivity (IEC 60754-2) EN 61034-2, Measurement of smoke density of cables burning under defined conditions
o Part 2: Test procedure and requirements (IEC 61034-2)

    • EN ISO 1716, Reaction to fire tests for products:
o Determination of the gross heat of combustion (calorific value) (ISO 1716)

    • CLC/TS 50576 Electric cables – Extended application of test results for reaction to fire

Stakeholders are advised to check their products comply with the latest cabling regulations in the EU.
