SGS Reminds Manufacturers and Retailers Domestic Oven Gloves Are Now PPE in Europe
Under PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 domestic oven gloves and mitts are now categorized as Category II PPE. Retailers and manufacturers must ensure their products comply with the latest rules.
- (1888PressRelease) April 26, 2018 - From April 21, 2018, domestic oven gloves and mitts have been classified as Category II Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). This means they must now carry the CE Mark and hold a Conformity Assessment by a Notified Body (NB) before they can be offered onto the market in Europe.
PPE is defined as equipment designed and manufactured to be worn or held by an individual for protection against one or more risks to the person’s health and/or safety. Under the previous European Union (EU) regulation, Directive 89/686/EEC, domestic oven gloves and mitts were not characterized as PPE but, based on risk, they are now classified as PPE under its replacement – Regulation (EU) 2016/425.
The change in regulations regarding PPE mean that after April 21, 2018, all new Category II products placed onto the market must carry the CE Mark and hold a NB’s Conformity Assessment. Stakeholders should be aware that in instances where the product bears the retailer’s logo, the retailer is considered to be the company placing the item onto the market and is therefore the de facto manufacturer. In this instance, stock held in warehouses/distribution centers should now also comply with the new regulations as the supply chain is considered to start when the retailer sells to the individual.
Category II products, including oven gloves and mitts, require NB certification before they can be sold in Europe. The criteria are set out in Annex V – the criteria for EU type-examination (Module B) – followed by conformity to type based on internal production control (Module C), in Annex VI. Certification under EU type-examination, Module B of Annex V, is valid for a period of five years.
Retailers and manufacturers of domestic oven gloves and mitts are advised to now check their products comply with the latest requirements of EU law.
