  • (1888PressRelease) July 19, 2018 - SGS has developed and copyrighted a data acquisition and motion control platform – Safety Testing Automation System (STAS) – to help electrical and electronic (EE) manufacturers reduce the time it takes for their products to reach the marketplace.

STAS incorporates a computerized approach to testing and reporting for EE products. It translates test methods into robotic language and establishes a communication connection between the control platform and the power supply system, testing instruments and auxiliary devices. This creates a more efficient approach to testing, with test data automatically being recorded during the assessment.

There are several benefits to this approach:

    • Quality results – higher quality results as manual operations, monitoring and recording are minimized or eliminated from the process
    • Better health, safety & environment (HSE) ratings – automated testing removes the need for the manual handling of dangerous products
    • Equipment optimization – automation increases testing capacity and productivity
    • Usable Data – digitized test data makes further analysis and utilization easier

STAS has been successfully utilized in the testing of many products, including batteries and LED lights. The Battery Testing Automation System (BATAS) has automated the installation and removal of testing samples or batteries using robots and can automatically export test data and reports via remote communication and control. The efficiencies seen in battery testing are also seen in LED light testing, where a mechanized approach has allowed the LED light-source Automation Testing System to function continuously for 24 hours. Before the implementation of STAS technology, the system had a capacity of two testing projects per day. By removing the manual aspects of the process, STAS has trebled that work rate to six projects a day.

In addition to greater productivity, STAS systems are also safer. For example, BATAS has significantly improved health and safety levels during battery testing. Traditionally, battery testing can be dangerous, with batteries causing fires and explosions as they are pushed to their limits. By reducing the input of human beings, BATAS has reduced the opportunity for injury.

As people become reliant on the Internet of Things (IoT), and the world becomes more automated, manufacturing is also entering a new age of interconnected intelligence. SGS has always understood the importance of science and technology in driving forward changes in our society and has been at the forefront of developing robotic and automation systems to expediate this process through more efficient testing. SGS systems can be found in laboratories around the world, revolutionizing testing in the automotive, chemical and EE sectors.
