SGS Publishes SafeGuardS to Help Consumer Goods Businesses Understand Recent US Developments in PFAS Restrictions
SGS publishes SafeGuardS to help manufacturers understand recent proposed bills to regulate PFAS in consumer goods in jurisdictions across the US.
- (1888PressRelease) February 22, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a SafeGuardS to help stakeholders understand the latest moves within the US to regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in consumers products.
PFAS, including perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), are a diverse group of synthetic chemicals that are used in industry and consumer goods to repel water, grease, oil and/or dirt. This function means they have been used in a wide variety of consumer products, including clothing, carpets, non-stick cookware, ski wax, upholstered furniture and firefighting foams.
However, they are increasingly being regulated because of their toxic effects and negative impact on the environment. Several US jurisdictions now have measures in place to regulate PFAS, including California, Colorado, Connecticut, Hawaii, Maine, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, San Francisco, Santa Rosa, Rhode Island, Vermont and Washington.
Understanding what products are regulated in different markets can be complicated as it varies between jurisdictions. To help stakeholders, SGS has published SafeGuardS 016/23. This includes a table summarizing the jurisdiction, scope, requirements and proposed effective date for multiple bills covering PFAS.
