SGS Publishes Overview of the US’s NPR for Button Cells, Coin Batteries and Consumer Products Contains Such Batteries
SGS publishes SafeGuardS looking at the US CPSC’s NPR for button cell, coin batteries and consumer products containing these batteries.
- (1888PressRelease) March 11, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that the US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has issued Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) 16 CFR 1263 (Safety Standard for Button Cell or Coin Batteries and Consumer Products Containing Such Batteries).
The NPR was published on February 9, 2023. Mandated by Reese’s Law, it aims to eliminate or reduce the risk of death or injury associated with ingestion of button cell or coin batteries by children six years of age or younger.
It establishes performance requirements for child-resistant button cell or coin battery compartments in all consumer products, to prevent access under foreseeable use and misuse.
The NPR has requirements for both removable and non-removable batteries, button cells and coin batteries, and establishes warning label requirements for packaging.
SGS has published SafeGuardS 022.23 to help stakeholders understand the proposed requirements for each battery type, the definitions for each battery type, labeling requirements and exemptions.
