SGS Offers Free Webinar on Amended EU Standard for Electric Toys
SGS is offering a free webinar on March 24, 2020, to help manufacturers and suppliers understand CENELEC’s new electric toy standard EN IEC 62115:2020 and A11:2020.
- (1888PressRelease) March 18, 2020 - On March 24, 2020, SGS will hold a webinar entitled, “Focus on EN IEC 62115:2020 for Electric Toys."
On February 21, 2020, the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) published EN IEC 62115:2020. This is the European Union (EU) version of IEC 62115:2017, an electric toy standard that aims towards worldwide harmonization.
CENELEC needed to publish an EU version to ensure it complied with the formal requirements of Directive 2009/48/EC, the so-called European Toy Safety Directive (TSD). These are included in a separate amendment – A11:2020.
Amendments include:
• References to other relevant European standards, like the EN 71-series, and relevant European directives
• The relationship between the standard and the essential safety requirements of the TSD
• A rationale explaining the standard’s requirements
Once the standard has been harmonized, i.e. accepted by the European Commission and Members States and it is published in the Official Journal of the EU (OJEU), it can be used to show compliance with the TSD.
The current harmonized standard is EN 62115:2005/A12:2015. The new standard, EN IEC 62115:2020 and A11:2020, although technically the same as IEC 62115:2017, is considerably different to EN 62115:2005/A12:2015.
Differences include:
• Changes regarding preconditioning (tests are to be performed with or without preconditioning, whatever is most unfavorable)
• Button and coin batteries: new requirements and new warnings. Button and coin batteries are likely to be ingested by children. The new requirements should make them less accessible
• New requirements for the safety of remote controls supplied with electrical ride-on toys
• New requirements and instructions for electric toys to be connected to class 1 equipment
• New requirements for supply via USB connection
• Clarification of humidity and moisture requirements
• Change of requirements regarding impact resistance for enclosures, the impact energy reduced from 0.7J to 0.5J
• Assessment of LED is modified using LED technical data sheet
Currently the transition period between old and amended standard is unknown but is expected to be two years when announced.
