  • (1888PressRelease) September 29, 2017 - Following the approval of Regulation 425/2016/EU, oven gloves and mitts are now classified as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), effective April 21, 2018. From this date, they must have their compliance tested by a Notified Body (NB), before they can carry the CE Mark and be sold in the European Union (EU).

SGS has produced the following advice for manufacturers of oven gloves and mitts to help them comply with the new requirements. They suggest:
    • Using some clauses of BS 6526, supplemented by new test method, ISO 12127-1 at a temperature of 250°C, as required by EN 407 for the palm of the hand
    • The back of the hand should be protected against heat contact, using the same requirements as the palm of the hand
    • To match requirements for protection to remain during lifespan of the glove or mitt, SGS is suggesting testing to 25 washes (for washable gloves and mitts)

In addition, the basic physical requirements for meeting CE Mark standards for protection against Contact Heat are:
    • BS 6526:1998
    o Clauses 4.2 Materials & 4.4 Dimensions
    • Determination of pH (skin irritation)
    • REACH, (specifically Azo Dyes)
    • Contact Heat @ 250°C (ISO 12127-1)
    o As new and;
o After multiple washes (ISO 6330)

The latest update has also clarified that existing products, which are already in the supply chain, can continue to be sold after April 21, 2018. Products placed onto the market after April 21, 2018, must comply with the new regulation and should be CE Marked.

To meet the requirements for CE Mark certification, a Technical File has to be assembled and submitted to a NB approved for the purpose. This is then reviewed against the essential health and safety requirements before certification can be granted.

Once a product is certified it can be labeled with the CE Mark but should not carry the NB number. The label, either attached to the product or to a label on the product, should contain:
    • Name, trademark or other means of identification of the manufacturer or his authorized representative
    • Designation of the product type, commercial name or code
    • Durable to the appropriate number of cleaning processes

For a full description of the labeling requirements and information on what should be included in the manufacturer’s instructions, see Safeguard 147/17.

Stakeholders are advised to now check their products’ compliance with the new standards. They should be aware that NB will require approval to the new regulation and also that EN 407 – Protective gloves against thermal risks, is currently being reviewed and no date has yet been set for it to be published and harmonized. Manufacturers and suppliers are therefore advised to follow SGS’s guidance, in order to maintain compliance.
