SGS Launches a New Service to Test the Efficacy of Foot Antiperspirant Products
SGS has launched new testing capability to enable manufacturers of antiperspirants designed for feet to test and certify the efficacy of their products.
- (1888PressRelease) November 12, 2020 - SGS, the world’s leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company, has launched a bespoke new testing service to enable manufacturers of antiperspirants for feet to test and certify the efficacy of their products.
National and international authorities require that efficacy claims of cosmetic products should be substantiated scientifically. However, despite an increasing number of foot-specific antiperspirants entering the cosmetics and personal care markets, the industry has no standard or norm equipped to test products directly at the site of action, i.e. under the feet.
Dr. Ines Sellami, Lab Manager Cosmetic Performance & Customer Service Consultant, SGS, said: “It became clear to our testing laboratory specialists, when tasked with testing the efficacy of foot antiperspirants, that not enough data exists to enable results from products tested under the arms to be generally transferred to products used under the feet.
“We realized that, to ensure robust testing and enable consumers to have confidence in their purchases, we needed to devise a scientifically supported test capable of measuring a product’s effectiveness directly on the feet. We are very proud to launch our new testing service which is available now.”
From its dedicated laboratory in Germany, SGS is equipped to measure important skin-associated parameters such as skin moisturization (Corneometer®), skin barrier integrity (Tewameter®), wrinkle-reduction (PRIMOS®) or deodorant-efficacy (sniff-test).
To develop the new test, SGS used ‘FDA Guidelines for effectiveness testing of OTC antiperspirant drug products’ as the basis. Tested with volunteers, it is based on the same principles: selection of test subjects, preconditioning phase, application amount, implementation (gravimetry) and evaluation (Wilcoxon test, Z-Score).
