SGS Issues SafeGuardS on Food Contact Plastics Substance Ban by Ukraine

(1888PressRelease) November 30, 2022 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is advising stakeholders that from January 21, 2023, 2,4,4’-trichloro-2’-hydroxydiphenyl ether, also known as Triclosan, will be banned from food contact plastics in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Health published Order No. 1735/2022 in October 2022. It prohibits the use of Triclosan, an antimicrobial agent, in the manufacture of plastic materials and articles intended to come into contact with food.

Triclosan is known to potentially have endocrine disrupting properties and is already banned in the European Union (EU) under Commission Decision 2010/169/EU of March 19, 2010.

Stakeholders should be aware that food contact plastics manufactured with Triclosan, and placed onto the market on or before January 1, 2023, can continue to be marketed for a period of twelve months (January 1, 2024).
