  • (1888PressRelease) December 05, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 166.24 on the US Consumer Product Safety Commission’s (CPSC) publication of final direct rule 16 CFR 1226, which incorporates the latest version of the ASTM standard for soft infant and toddler carriers.

A soft infant and toddler carrier is defined in the rule as a product that is normally of sewn fabric construction, designed to contain full-term infants to toddlers, generally in an upright position and in close proximity to a caregiver. These products are stated as being normally worn with the weight of the child and carrier suspended from one or both shoulders, away from the front, side or back of the caregiver’s body. The definition does not include products generally referred to as ‘slings’.

Published on November 20, 2024, 16 CFR 1226 now aligns with the ASTM F2236-24 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Soft Infant and Toddler Carriers. Barring significant adverse comments received by the CPSC before December 20, 2024, the rule will become effective on February 22, 2025.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 166.24 includes details of the changes in the updated version of 16 CFR 1226 and a link to it on the ASTM website.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 166.24 for more details.
