SGS Highlights Firefighting PPE PFAS Regulation in US State of Massachusetts

(1888PressRelease) November 15, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 157.24, reporting measures approved by the US state of Massachusetts to regulate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in firefighting personal protective equipment (FPPE).

Many PFAS have been found to be toxic to animal, human and environmental health. New law, S.2902 (Chapter 182), defines them as a class of fluorinated chemicals containing at least one fully fluorinated carbon atom. FPPE is defined as clothing or wearable items for firefighting personnel in the performance of their duties that are designed for use in fire and rescue activities, including, but not limited to footwear, gloves, helmets, jackets, pants and respiratory equipment.
