SGS Conducts Soil Testing for the Irrigation Project in Western Australia
In April 2010, SGS was assigned a contract to conduct Soil Testing for an irrigation expansion project, which aims at creating a dynamical regional centre in Western Australia by extending the irrigated area. SGS is providing a wide range of Soil Testing services, including sieving analysis and compaction tests.
- (1888PressRelease) September 17, 2010 - In April 2010, SGS was awarded a contract to execute Soil Testing for the irrigation project in Australia. The project is expected to be completed by the end of October 2010.
The irrigation project, developed in Western Australia will extend the irrigated area by 8,000 hectares and aims at realizing the full potential of available natural resources in the region in order to provide economic and social development. The improvement of social, community and common-use infrastructure, including off-farm water supply, drainage and roads will be achieved. Moreover, indigenous people will benefit through employment, business development and improved community facilities.
As the project in the Western Australia region was very significant, the project required a reliable third-party testing company to conduct Soil Testing. Therefore, SGS Australia, with its extensive experience and competence in such projects, received the contract to provide Soil Testing services, including sieving analysis and compaction test.
Soil Testing offered by SGS determines the density, moisture content and drying effects of soil in the Western Australia region. It is indispensable for assessing the soil fertility and proper application of nutrients in order to maximize the yield in the region. Furthermore, Soil Testing provided by SGS is very important for analyzing the physical performance, characteristics and classification of the soil used for building roads and drainage systems to ensure the top quality of the planned infrastructure.
A team of two highly qualified SGS experts collect soil samples with a soil probe from the surface (0-15 cm) and subsurface (15-60 cm) in order to assess the quality of soil in a reliable and adequate way. These soil samples are analyzed by SGS specialists in a portable laboratory which was built specifically for the irrigation project. Sieving analysis and compaction tests are conducted in accordance with Australian Standards including AS1289.
