SGS Conducts Radiographic Testing of Casting Frames in China
On June 1, 2010, SGS was assigned a six-week contract to provide Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) services for a large manufacturer of aircraft and mass transportation equipment. During the contract SGS checked the integrity of 100 sets of casting frames of metro cars, applying Radiographic Testing, a conventional NDT method.
- (1888PressRelease) September 07, 2010 - On June 1, 2010, SGS China was awarded a contract to check the integrity of 100 sets of the casting frames of metro cars, using Radiographic Testing, a conventional NDT method, by a global leader in aerospace and rail transportation.
The client looked for a reliable third-party testing company, which could provide Non-Destructive Testing of casting frames of metro cars, produced in China, in a very short time. Therefore SGS opened two test sites in Qingdao, China and organized a team of NDT experts within two days. Four SGS NDT experts and fourteen SGS NDT inspectors worked around the clock to provide Non-Destructive Testing of the casting frames in the shortest possible time.
In order to detect any imperfections and failures in the casting frames and ensure the top quality, SGS applied Radiographic Test. Radioactive X-rays and Gamma-rays were directed during the testing at the casting frames of metro cars, while a negative film was positioned behind. The film was then processed and showed an image displayed as a sequence of grey shades between black and white. After the development of the film, SGS experts analyzed thickness and density differences to detect material imperfections and discontinuities.
Due to the extensive experience in similar projects, SGS conducted the NDT tests on 100 sets of casting frames and evaluate over 6,000 pieces of films within six weeks.
