SGS publishes Consumer Compact article looking at the issue of non-flushable wipes in waste water systems and the solutions available to test for flushability.
- (1888PressRelease) July 11, 2023 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published a Consumer Compact article looking at the issue of wipe flushability.
A 2016 forensic study of waste at New York City’s Wards Island Wastewater Treatment Facility found the system contained only 2% flushable wipes. Of the rest that wasn’t bodily waste or toilet paper, 98% was non-flushable products – baby wipes, paper towels, feminine hygiene products, etc. This can lead to fatbergs that cost water companies millions of dollars to remove.
