Sensor Manufacturer Lion Precision Joins Governor Tim Pawlenty's Trade Mission to China
Lion Precision and other Minnesota businesses accompanied Governor Tim Pawlenty on a trade mission to China where these businesses were able to make contacts with Chinese trade officials and begin connecting with local organizations to represent their products in China.
- (1888PressRelease) October 27, 2010 - Don Martin, president of Lion Precision, and Jerry Mueller, application engineer, recently returned from a trade mission to China and Japan with Governor Tim Pawlenty and other Minnesota business leaders. The purpose of the mission was to promote communication, collaboration and trade between Minnesota companies and China and Japan. While in China, Lion Precision established a relationship with AMT, a machine tool trade association, that will assist Lion Precision during the process of translation and adaptation of materials and searching for local representation.
Martin says that the "rapid advancement of Chinese markets and technology have them in need of the sensor technology that we can provide and is not yet available from Chinese sources." One hindrance to freer trade with China is U.S. export restrictions that apply to many Lion Precision products because of their high level of precision. These restrictions delay shipments by many weeks and often result in denial of an export license. The company has responded by designing new products with slightly less precision that do not require export licensing. In spite of their reduced precision, these instruments still provide useful measurement systems used in manufacturing, production and research. Martin believes that by the end of 2011 the company should have established representation in China and begun to ship product to this new and vast source of customers.
Lion Precision provides high-resolution capacitive and eddy-current noncontact displacement sensors that are optimized for specific applications including custom designs. Precision position and high-speed motion are common applications for these high-performance sensors. Lion Precision products are used in large industrial measurements and subnanometer resolution measurements of the micro- and nano-technology worlds.
Lion Precision, an ISO9001:2001 registered company, was founded in 1958 by Dr. Kurt Lion, a professor at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). He was the first to develop capacitive sensing into a broad industrial measurement solution.
