Seneca Village Montessori School Opens New Location In the Heart Of Brooklyn
An African Centered Preschool With a Montessori Philosophy.
- (1888PressRelease) January 09, 2018 - First school of its kind, Seneca Village Montessori School ("SVMS") utilizes the well known Montessori method, which encourages intrinsic learning through movement, activity, and creativity, guided by an African centered approach to teaching, providing Black children with an afrocentric curriculum which helps them build a strong sense of self, heritage, and culture.
The foundation of SVMS is quite unique and premised on the Nguzo Saba or the seven principles, (Umoja (Unity), Kujichagulia (Self-Determination), Ujima (Collective Work and Responsibility), Ujamaa (Cooperative Economics), Nia (Purpose), Kuumba (Creativity), Imani (Faith).
“We believe that the teaching of these principles and their message will help in the development of an Afrocentric value system for our students. Afrocentric values lead to Afrocentric goals, which lead to a new history for African people,” says Sharifa Hodges, Director of SVMS.
Moreover, the Montessori method not only fosters the growth of functional independence, task persistence, and self-regulation but also promotes social development through respectful, clear communication and safe, natural consequences. In addition, the classroom contains a large variety of materials for the refinement of sensory perception and the development of literacy and mathematical understanding and provides opportunities for imaginative exploration leading to confident, creative self-expression.
