Second Las Vegas Protest Rally Planned In Trayvon Martin Case
Diverse crowds expected to gather to protest violence, racism and loss of life in a peaceful "Hoodie" rally that celebrates the life of slain youth.
- Las Vegas, NV-AZ (1888PressRelease) March 30, 2012 - In a show of solidarity, a second protest rally will take place on Sat., March 31, 2012 at 2:00 pm at the Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center. Organizers hope to build on the momentum of last week's rally with the addition of community and political activists. Invited guests include, Assemblywoman Dina Neal, City Councilman, Ricki Barlow, Assembly candidate, Leisa Moseley and other community leaders. The rally will also include local entertainers, P.O.E.T.-LV, spoken-word artists, Intelligenz, Solid, Bria Feist and recording artist, Ibrahim Siddiq with DJ Certified of Power 88 radio station. Participants are encouraged to wear hoodies which have become an iconic symbol of protest for the Trayvon Martin case. Martin, 17 years-old was shot and killed in Sanford, Florida on February 26, apparently deemed suspicious because he was wearing a hoodie. "We want to let the world know that Las Vegans won't stand idly by in the face of violence, racism and hate." "We're bringing together all ages, all races from all walks of life, in peaceful harmony to say enough is enough." says Rena Kopystenski, Executive Director of Giovanni's Legacy Foundation.
The Las Vegas rally is just one of many national protests calling for shooter, George Zimmerman's arrest and justice for Martin that has grown amid allegations of racism along with criticism of how local authorities handled the investigation. Last Sunday, many local Las Vegas church congregations wore hoodies in support of the Martin family, and a hoodie gathering took place in the courtyard of Raw Remedies, a therapeutic beauty boutique. Wednesday, April 4th also marks the 44th anniversary of the assassination of Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Saturday's event will celebrate the lives of both Martins who died at the hands of another. Rally event organizers include the publisher of Our Own Voices Magazine, Rodney Smith in association with Rena Kopystenski, Executive Director of Giovanni's Legacy Foundation, P.O.E.T.-LV, Black Vegas.com and the Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center.
The Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center is located at 1625 West Carey, North Las Vegas, NV 89032 (Carey and MLK). The organizers are available for interview upon request. For more information about the event, please call 702-430-6685.
