A completely revised and updated edition of the critically acclaimed Leary's Global Wineology is now available.
I was impressed with the author's treatment of diversity, equity and inclusion in wine education, to discuss issues like bias, racism and sexism.
(1888PressRelease) June 21, 2024 - Charlie Leary, PhD, is pleased to announce the publication of the second edition of Leary’s Global Wineology: A Guide to Wine Education, Mentorships, and Scholarships. This edition is currently available on Amazon and will be available through bookshops and distributors in the US and the UK.
Content from the first edition published in late 2022 has been completely updated and expanded, including newly-listed courses and degree programs. The book is intended for those wanting to increase their personal wine knowledge or to build a career involving wine. Global Wineology is the only guide to wine education courses and makes an indispensable reference for students, wine professionals, parents, and guidance counselors.
Wine journalist and expert Jane Anson says it provides “an indispensable guide to what is out there - from scholarships to professional training and mentorship programs, across all aspects of the wine industry. Full of inspiration and practical advice.” Another wine expert, Miquel Hudson, calls it “a very complete book of which I know of no other like it and if you're looking to get started in wine or want to further your education in another direction, I'd recommend picking it up.”
Professor Pierre Ly, writing in the Wine Economist, said of the first edition: “Charlie Leary presents a clear, comprehensive resource for anyone interested in pursuing wine education from beginner to expert levels. The book is well-organized and covers programs for every budget and purpose, in both academic and non-academic settings, and in many countries.”
Professor Ly added, “I was impressed with the author’s treatment of diversity, equity and inclusion in wine education, to discuss issues like bias, racism and sexism. This is important because criticisms of the insularity and lack of diverse representation in the wine industry have gained more visibility in recent years.”
The new edition includes an interview with Romané Basset of the Basset Foundation, a major provider of wine scholarships. It also includes helpful lists such as the top 3 innovative wine education programs and “Notable Recent Developments in Wineology.” There are chapters on wine studies and sommelier courses such as WSET, but also many others; universities offering viticulture and enology programs; wine business programs; and free online wine education options.
A member of the Circle of Wine Writers, Charlie Leary is a widely published wine journalist, historian, and educator. He earned his PhD at Cornell University.
