  • Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL (1888PressRelease) August 18, 2018 - Clearwater, FL – On Saturday August 18, the Clearwater Community Volunteers Center, supported by the Church of Scientology Flag Service Organization, will host the regional meeting of SCUBAnauts International, Inc., a non-profit organization that teaches marine science through SCUBA diving to local youth to develop the community leaders of tomorrow while improving our ocean environment. The regional meeting will bring several chapters of SCUBAnauts into the Center, and will have over 40 members in attendance.

The Tampa, Tarpon Springs, Sarasota, and Saint Petersburg Chapters will be at the regional meeting to study the science required to coordinate their diving activities throughout the year and honor rank advancements within the organization.

SCUBAnauts International, Inc. was founded over 10 years ago, and assists its members to obtain their status as true underwater scientists though membership in the American Academy of Underwater Sciences. This AAUS status enables SCUBAnauts to work in a true academic capacity and have done so throughout Florida, around the Gulf of Mexico, Belize, and Hawaii. They have employed their diving skills for hundreds of underwater science surveys, coral transplants and coral nursery work, and installing and monitoring artificial reef balls to help maintain and develop marine life ecosystems. The next on-going project, which they’ll begin to study this weekend, is a return to seagrass monitoring off our local shores.

Michael Soltero, Manager for the Clearwater Community Volunteers center said, “SCUBAnauts teaches kids practical diving skills so that they can create an improved environment for people to live in. SCUBAnauts’ efforts to help people by giving them a better environment exemplifies what humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard once said, ‘There are many things one can do to help take care of the planet. … It is, after all, what we’re standing on.’”

To support activities such as these, the Clearwater Community Volunteers Center provides the meeting space and refreshments to non-profit organizations, like SCUBAnauts, at no cost.
