Scientists from Russia's Ural Federal University are Developing a Mobile Power Station for Arctic Regions
The work of UrFU’s researchers has been recognized as one of Russia's best inventions.
- (1888PressRelease) October 11, 2017 - A mobile wave power plant developed by Sergei Shcheklein and Alexander Popov of Ural Federal University, Ekaterinburg, Russia, has been included in the list of the top 100 Russia's greatest inventions of 2016, according to the Federal Service for Intellectual Property of the Russian Federation.
"We were able to improve the efficiency of the unit through simultaneous use of both kinetic and potential wave energy," says Alexander Popov, one of the inventors. "The machine uses the energy of short waves, is able to adjust to the current wave environment and to orient itself to the direction of the waves."
According to Sergei Shсheklein, the scientists were able to create a compressed air energy storage with high parameters.
"UrFU as a patent holder, having been shortlisted in "Top 100 Russia's Greatest Inventions", may expect to receive investments in this area to develop technical documentation and to exploit such products in the industry," adds Alexander Popov.
The scientists of UrFU’s Academic Department of Nuclear Plants and Renewable Energy Sources also patented a wave power plant that uses the platform swaying and direct conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy. This is suitable for the widely-spread float-type stations that use only the wave amplitude.
Another invention of the Ural scientists is the screw wave machine, the efficiency of which has been enhanced by extraction of kinetic energy and simultaneous extraction of energy from several waves.
The use of marine wave energy is one of the promising areas for researchers working on renewable energy and is particularly important for the intensive development of the Arctic regions. Remote territories deprived of the network energy services are interested in the hydraulic wave energy as marine energy replaces organic fuel combustion and reduces the import of various types of fuels.
