  • Savannah, GA (1888PressRelease) February 22, 2012 - Memorial University Medical Center (MUMC) recently received a $500,000 endowed gift to support the education of both medical school students and those studying nursing, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistance, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy. Memorial and the Mercer University School of Medicine Savannah campus have restricted $250,000 of the permanent endowment to enhance diversity among medical school students.

The Memorial University Scholarship for Medical School Students will provide selected students $10,000 per year for their four years of medical school (up to $40,000 total per student). At least ten additional scholarships of $1,000 will be available to students in allied healthcare programs on the Memorial campus.

"It's important that our physician workforce be as diverse as our patient population. We want to draw students from a wide range of backgrounds and encourage them to practice medicine. This scholarship will help with that," said Ramon Meguiar, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer at MUMC.

Selection of recipients from both scholarship funds will be based on a number of criteria. Medical school students must be accepted to and planning to attend Mercer University School of Medicine Savannah campus. Priority will be given to local applicants.

Winners will be selected by a committee consisting of the chief medical officer at Memorial University Medical Center, the dean of the Mercer School of Medicine Savannah campus, the vice president of the Memorial Health Foundation, and a physician.

Allied healthcare students including nursing, physical/occupational therapy, physician assistance, respiratory therapy, and pharmacy, who are practicing on Memorial's campus will be eligible to apply for funding of up to $1,000. Applicants must have the recommendation of their manager and a professor and plan to practice at Memorial Health.
