  • (1888PressRelease) January 21, 2022 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, is reminding stakeholders that Saudi Arabia has postponed the implementation of its restriction of hazardous substances (RoHS) technical regulation for electrical and electronic (EE) equipment.

The Saudi Arabian Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) published its RoHS for EE (SASO RoHS) on July 9, 2021. It was originally scheduled to come into effect on January 5, 2022, but, following a meeting of the Conformity Steering Committee on December 5, 2021, it has now been postponed for a further six months. After this, implementation will be conducted in stages with the following mandatory enforcement dates:
    • July 4, 2022 – small electrical home appliances
    • October 2, 2022 – large electrical home appliances
    • December 31, 2022 – information and communication technology equipment
    • March 31, 2023 – lighting equipment
    • June 29, 2023 – EE tools and equipment
    • September 27, 2023 – games, entertainment devices and sports equipment
    • December 26, 2023 – monitoring and control tools

Under SASO RoHS, EE products must meet relevant requirements before entering the Saudi market. These include the following substance limits:
    • Lead (Pb): 0.1% wt.
    • Mercury (Hg): 0.1 % wt.
    • Cadmium (Cd): 0.01% wt.
    • Hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)): 0.1% wt.
    • Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB): 0.1% wt.
    • Polybrominated biphenyls ethers (PBDE): .1% wt.

SASO RoHS also requires conformity assessment, so that any supplier placing EE equipment onto Saudi markets is responsible for obtaining a certificate of conformity issued by a notified body approved by SASO, such as SGS, in accordance with the Conformity Assessment Form (Type 1a) as per ISO/IEC 17067. The product must also be accompanied by a technical file that includes supplier (manufacturer/importer) Declaration of Conformity, risk assessment document, the necessary warnings, cautions and manuals for the safe and proper use of the product.
