Saudi Arabia Introduces Energy Efficiency Labeling Regulations for Some EE Products
Electrical and electronic products, such as refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, washing machines, electric motors and lights, must comply with SASO regulations before entering the Saudi Arabian market.
- (1888PressRelease) October 10, 2017 - The Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has announced new Energy Efficiency Labeling Regulations for certain electrical and electronic (EE) products. Manufacturers and importers must ensure their products are compliant with the new regulations before accessing the South Arabian market.
The new Energy Efficiency Labelling Regulations (EER) require the energy efficiency to be displayed on the following products:
• Refrigerators (including the refrigerator and/or freezer function)
• Air conditioners
• Washing machines
• Electric motors
• Lighting products
Manufacturers and importers of EE products falling under the scope of these regulations will be required to undergo product testing and the SASO EER Registration process, to show their products comply with the following standards:
• Refrigerators and Freezers SASO 2664/2013
• Air Conditioners SASO 2663/2014; SASO 2681/2013; SASO 2682/2013; SASO 2874/2016
• Washing Machines SASO 2692/2013; SASO 2683/2007; SASO 2693/2007
• Lighting products SASO 2870/2015
• Electric Motors SASO IEC 60034-30:2013; SASO IEC 60034-2-1:2007
SASO EER certification lasts for a period of one year.
For Electric Motors, the rated efficiency and the code of IE-Nominal limits (%) (IE, International Energy-efficiency Class) shall be durably marked on the rating plate, for example “IE2 – 84,0 %”.
The SASO was established as a judicial body by Royal Decree No M/10 dated AH 1392-03-03. Its board of directors, headed by H.E. the Minister of Commerce, consists of representatives from all the major sectors affected by the scope of the new body. The SASO is charged with providing regional leadership in the fields of standardization and conformity assessment. It has a mission to, “elevate the standards and the quality of products and services, to protect the consumer and to strengthen the competitiveness of the national economy.”
