SAP Master Data Governance Integration by SAPVITS
SAPVITS implemented SAP MDG integration solution for including master data governance on the material master for one our customers that have an ERP view including many SAP systems and non-SAP systems.
- (1888PressRelease) October 06, 2017 - We focused on the SAP systems first while the implementation and later proceeded up with a scalable integration clarification with non-SAP systems.
The requirement for SAP MDG integration was along the following lines
1. Integration solution should be scalable to allow to add non-SAP ERP system into data governance as and when such operations are ready.
2. Introduction of integration should not require any new development effort in the SAP MDG system.
3. Get and process acknowledgment providing success or failure message.
4. SAP user interface should be allowed to provide the information host to select and choose the target non-SAP ERP systems to replicate the material master data.
Scalability is a specific predominant requirement as the number of non-SAP ERP systems are around 30+, therefore having a mini development design for all of such application as and when the countries represented by these applications connect the global data governance process is not an available. So the integration solution needs to be created in such a way that any new country connecting the global data governance stream is just handled by a master data type extension. This requires us to study hard about growing up a viable solution that achieves this scalability and at the same time is not technically complicated to develop in the first place.
After studying various solution choices we proceeded ahead among the approved SAP classification based solution. The outlines of the solution are
• All material generated by the MDG solution will have a default material type specified.
• The class will have characteristic whose value describes the non-SAP ERP system.
• This way any new non-SAP ERP system is just handled by addition of one characteristic value.
• Any amount of work in the middleware SAP PI is required once the specific value is determined in MDG but does not include much specific development effort in SAP PI.
From a SAP MDG solution improvement perspective, simply major disadvantage we faced was due to the fact that SAP creates a separate doc information for material distribution values for integration with outside systems, which means the middleware has to process to two doc information for each material and that can make it complex for middleware. So to eliminate this we had to enhance the standard material master doc information with additional segments to carry the classification values too. But still this is a one-time improvement effort and we determined that there are much amount of effort and cost gains related to alternate solution which might need a development for each non-SAP ERP application addition to master data governance and went forward with this strategy.
