Sangam University VC Talks on Save Girl Child Theme - Mewar Chamber of Commerce & Industry Bhilwara
A powerful indicator of social health of any society is CSR which is the number of girls per 1000 boys in the 0 - 6 Age group. According to the 2011 census, CSR for India today stands at 914 as compared to 927 in 2001, 945 in 1991 and 976 in 1961. The CSR for Rajasthan in 2001 and 2011 stood at 909 and 883 respectively which is quite alarming indeed.
- (1888PressRelease) June 20, 2013 - On 17 June 2013 at MCCI - Mewar Chamber of Commerce & Industry Bhilwara, a grand function was organized to celebrate the Birthday of Padmasri Nana Chudasama the founder of Giants International with focus on the theme "Save Girl Child". Various speakers included Sri RK Jain the heart and soul of ICSI - Institute of Company Secretaries of India Bhilwara Chapter and well known education consultant Sri Anil Choudhary of Bhilwara.
From Sangam University, CRC head Sri Surendra Jain and Dr Preeti Mehta faculty also attended the same. Asma Shaik anchored the proceedings and Sumit Kachara proposed vote of thanks. Several ICSI students recited poems, gave passion packed speeches and displayed posters centered on the theme Save Girl Child.
On this occasion, Professor BR Natarajan President - Vice Chancellor of Sangam University Bhilwara who is himself a member of Giants International addressing the audience narrated how he got into taking up the cause of Girl Child after reading an article in the highly respected newspaper "The Hindu" dated 16 Mar 2008 titled Grim Realities which had dragged the name of his Alma mater Birla Institute of Technology and Science - BITS Pilani while correlating high literacy and abysmally low CSR of 327 girls for 1000 boys. In his speech Prof Natarajan highlighted the following:
On December 19, 2011, a historic milestone for girls' rights was achieved when the United Nations General Assembly formally declared October 11 as the International Day of the Girl Child. However, considering the importance of the Girl Child in the larger interests of the nation building task, Government of India way back in the year 2009 itself had declared that January 24 be observed every year as National Girl Child Day. It was on this date in 1966 Smt Indira Gandhi became the first woman Prime Minister of India.
For meeting the challenges of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance, Gender equality is indeed more than a goal in itself as it is a precondition.
To quote UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon "Investing in girls is a moral imperative - a matter of basic justice and equality. It is an obligation under the Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women. It is also critical for achieving the MDG - Millennium Development Goals, advancing economic growth and building peaceful, cohesive societies."
The audience gave a thunderous applause when the very recently released video of "Betiyaan - Save the Girl Child" which opened with Union Law Minister Sri Kapil Sibal reciting his poem followed by the 'Betiyaan' song featuring well-known Bollywood names like Hema Malini, Ajay Devgan, John Abraham, Sushmita Sen, Raveena Tandon, Shilpa Shetty, Sonakshi Sinha, Sonu Nigam, Sunidhi Chauhan, Shankar, Ehsaan and Loy, and Bandana Sharma apart from the southern star Nagarjuna was played.
Prof Natarajan concluded his speech stating that like the Indian Railways, mind set of Indians about girl child must change from narrow gauge to broad gauge and should not predecide even before child birth that beta means engineer and beti means doctor as depicted in the movie 3 Idiots a film adopted from the novel Five Point Someone by Chetan Bhagat well known bestselling author and alumnus of IIT Delhi and IIM Ahmedabad.
Since the task of a University is the creation of future, it is imperative that for a Better India Tomorrow, Best Colleges of India today must take up Campaign to Save Girl Child.
