UN was founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
- (1888PressRelease) October 29, 2013 - The Charter of the United Nations was signed on 26 June 1945, in San Francisco, at the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on International Organization, and came into force on 24 October 1945. Due to its unique international character, and the powers vested in its founding Charter, the Organization can take action on a wide range of issues, and provide a forum for its 193 Member States to express their views. The main bodies of UN include through the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council - ECOSOC, the Trusteeship Council, the International Court of Justice and the Secretariat.
Every day the United Nations works to tackle Global Challenges which include provision of food to 90 million people in 75 countries; combats climate change by working with 140 nations to prevent harmful mercury emissions; assists over 34 million refugees and people fleeing war, famine or persecution; vaccinates 58% of the world's children 2.5 million lives year; keeps the peace with 120,000 peacekeepers in 16 operations on 4 continents; uses diplomacy to prevent conflict apart from assisting some 50 countries a year with elections; protects and promotes human rights on site and through 80 treaties / declarations; fights poverty helping 370 million rural poor achieve better lives in the last 30 years; mobilizes US$12.5 Billion in Humanitarian Aid to help people affected by emergencies; promotes maternal health in terms of saving the lives of 30 million women a year.
Sangam University which has established a rich tradition of celebrating various days of national as well as global importance, observed 68th United Nations Day on 24 Oct 2013. A team of faculty members addressed students from School of Engineering, Management and Science and highlighted the significance of the day with the above details including an overview of the main bodies of UN apart from acronyms of UN related specialized agencies, Research and Training Institutes as well as Funds & Programmes.
