San Francisco Vein Center Introduces Radiofrequency Ablation to Treat Varicose Veins
San Francisco Vein Center, a vein treatment clinic, now uses a minimally invasive technique -- Radiofrequency Ablation -- to treat varicose veins.
- Albuquerque, NM (1888PressRelease) November 12, 2012 - San Francisco Vein Center now uses an alternative and less painful treatment to endovenous laser therapy (EVLT) called radiofrequency ablation (RFA) to treat vein disorder symptoms.
Research shows that over 25 million Americans suffer from vein disorders which can cause symptoms like heavy and painful legs, leg ulcers, spider veins, varicose veins, and deep vein thrombosis. Melinda L Aquino MD, founder of the San Francisco Vein Center, explained that these symptoms are commonly caused by a condition called venous insufficiency where valves in the veins become ineffective. Radiofrequency ablation effectively removes the bad veins allowing the deeper functioning veins to take over and relieves the symptoms causes by venous insufficiency.
In the past, varicose vein removal was performed with a surgery called vein stripping, in which the main greater saphenous vein was pulled out forcefully from the body. This was a very invasive surgery requiring general anesthesia and several weeks of recovery time.
In the last several years, newer, less invasive techniques have replaced the old method of vein stripping. These techniques include endovenous laser ablation as well as radiofrequency ablation. In these procedures, the vein is closed from the inside, and simply left in place. This results in much less pain, and virtually no downtime. Often the procedure is performed in the doctors' office, with only local anesthesia.
In a press meeting, Dr Aquino explained the advantages of the treatment: "Both treatments are effective. However, radiofrequency ablation uses radiofrequency energy in 20 second bursts causing the vein to shrink and close as the treatment is administered. With time, the vein actually gets absorbed by the body and disappears. Laser treatment uses a heating element which has frequencies ranging from 810 to 1470 nanometers (nm). This strong energy can occasionally cause leakage of blood from the vessel as well as bruising. Laser does not shrink the vein, but rather causes clot formation causing the vessel to occlude and block the flow of blood. The problem with this method is that it is often associated with a lot more lingering pain than radiofrequency ablation."
Radiofrequency ablation is a minimally procedure and patients can choose to have it performed in a doctor's office or hospital. The manager of the San Francisco Vein Center said that this new procedure is advantageous because it is more flexible. He explained, "This is a simple yet very effective procedure that causes very little pain. Only local anesthesia is utilized and sometimes a mild sedative. Recovery is quick and patients can resume their normal routine the next day." Furthermore, this procedure is usually covered by most major insurance companies.
