  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) October 31, 2010 - Now more than ever, as world peace is on the minds of so many, the Pinwheels for Peace Project is very timely. The Sagemont School engaged their elementary grade students in conversations about peace through this innovative program presented on World Peace Day. Art teacher, Lauren Tubbs, read about the project in SchoolArts magazine and knew it was something she wanted to share with her students.

Sagemont students in preschool through fifth grade were asked to draw something that brings them peace and then to write a personal wish for peace on the inside of their pinwheel. On September 21, the International Day of Peace, the pinwheels were "planted." Ms. Tubbs told the students that when the wind spins the pinwheel, it is sending his or her wish into the world.

According to Ms. Tubbs, "The Pinwheels for Peace Project fits in perfectly with our school because Sagemont has always focused on promoting kindness and being a bully-free school." Third grader Tiana Artis enjoyed making her pinwheel. She said, "Sometimes when I hear the word "peace" I think of how our school is a "Bully Free Zone" and how nice and beautiful my school is."

By participating in this project, the students became more aware of respecting individual differences, reaching out to their classmates who need help and treating everyone with tolerance and compassion. Students were also made aware of how fortunate they are to live in a peaceful community. Sagemont Guidance Counselor Maritza Zea said, "The key to peace is in the eyes, hearts and minds of children. By "planting" peace in their hearts and minds, we are teaching them never to forget the children who suffer needlessly each and every day."

The Sagemont School serves preschool students starting at age three through high school graduation. This dynamic college prep school is accessible to the Fort Lauderdale area, including Weston, Davie, Cooper City, Miramar and Sunrise. For students in preschool through grade 5, Sagemont provides core concepts in a creative environment combined with weekly specials that include science, art, music, Spanish for non-native & native speakers, swimming, PE and media and technology. From middle school through high school graduation, Sagemont students choose from a variety of regular, honors and AP course work. In addition, students share in a networked wireless laptop environment and participate in a comprehensive guidance program for college entrance.
