RWE takes electric car on a 4000-kilometre field test
"Culture bridge“ from Essen to Istanbul, Route goes right across the Balkans.
- (1888PressRelease) September 17, 2010 - RWE has given today the go-ahead for a new large-scale test of electro-mobility's fitness for everyday use. A team of young drivers will cover 4000 kilometres from Essen to Istanbul in a Tesla Roadster within 13 days. "In so doing, we are also building a bridge between the two capitals of culture", said Dr. Jürgen Großmann, Chief Executive Officer of RWE AG. Apart from Essen, the Turkish metropolitan centre of Istanbul is one of Europe's capitals of culture this year. "At the same time, we will demonstrate in 17 European cities that e-mobility is already suitable for everyday use", Großmann went on to say.
RWE's team will have stopovers in Frankfurt, Augsburg, Laibach, Zagreb, Budapest and Belgrade among others. The Tesla will also be charged at the Großglockner in Austria where Europe's highest power charging station is located. Midway, the team will meet a delegation from the Hungarian city of Pecs. Pecs is this year's third European capital of culture. The team is due to arrive in Istanbul on 28 September.
Dr. Fritz Pleitgen and Professor Dr. Oliver Scheytt, the managing directors of Ruhr 2010 attended the start of the team. Pleitgen: "Istanbul is always worth a visit. Especially when this involves a journey into the future. Electric cars hold the future. RWE sends vehicles of this new car generation on a trip from Essen to Istanbul. In addition to the 20 joint projects, this builds another bridge between the two European capitals of culture 2010 which have committed themselves to progress. Have a good trip!"
Pleitgen and Scheytt handed over a message to the driver team with greetings to the organisers in Istanbul.
Before the start, Ingo Alpheus, Chief Executive Officer of RWE Effizienz GmbH, where the e-mobility unit belongs in organisational terms, explained the tour plan and additional details of the trip.
Alpheus: "Electro-mobility is no longer in its infancy. Nonetheless our programme is ambitious. 4000 kilometres in 13 days across eight countries between the Federal Republic and Turkey. In addition, a leg across the Großglockner High Road. This is quite a challenge indeed."
When talking with politicians and economic leaders in Eastern and Southeast Europe, RWE met with great interest in electro-mobility. Jürgen Großmann: "Electro-mobility is not just a national business for us. Especially in Southeast Europe, i.e. in the countries along our route, we have already been conducting interesting talks".
