RWE Power appeals against imposed temporary decommissioning of its Biblis power station
RWE Power lodged an appeal today with the relevant Administrative Court of Appeal in Kassel (VGH) against the interim decommissioning of its Biblis power station for a three-month period, which was imposed by the Hesse supervisory authority on 18 March.
- (1888PressRelease) April 04, 2011 - Unit A was decommissioned as a result, while Unit B was already undergoing a scheduled technical revision at that time. According to the legal conception and interpretation of law at RWE Power, the legal basis cited by the German government for taking this measure in accordance with §19 of the German Atomic Energy Act is not given.
Since German nuclear power plants comply with all relevant safety requirements, there are no legal grounds for decommissioning them. In taking the legal step of appealing against the decomissioning, RWE is seeking to protect the interests of its shareholders.
Notwithstanding the appeal, the company supports the German government’s decision to conduct a safety review of all its nuclear power plants. It is a necessary and logical step to examine the severe nuclear accident in Japan very carefully and use any relevant insights derived from such an analysis to enhance the already high safety standards of German nuclear power plants. RWE also expressly welcomes all international and European efforts to work closely together in re-examining the safety of nuclear power plants worldwide.
