RWE Dea establishes gas storage company
Effective 1 April 2012, RWE Dea AG transferred its activities associated with the natural gas storage facility at Inzenham-West near Rosenheim to the company RWE Dea Speicher GmbH. The new company is wholly owned by RWE Dea. The Managing Director of the new gas storage company based in Hamburg is Jörg Fanger (42).
- (1888PressRelease) April 27, 2012 - With this step, RWE Dea fulfils the requirements of the Energy Sector Act in relation to the unbundling of the operation of storage facilities from the company’s other activities, pooling the construction, operation and marketing of storage capacities in the new company instead. “We look forward to meeting the challenges of this business and to enliven the competition in this new constellation,” says Fanger.
With a useable storage volume of about 5 terawatt hours (TWH), RWE Dea Speicher GmbH is making an important contributing towards providing consumers with a secure energy supply. Information about free storage capacities is published on the web site www.rwedea-speicher.de. The storage activities of RWE Dea Speicher GmbH help adjust the amount of available natural gas in a targeted manner to the fluctuations in consumer demand. During the summer, when consumption is low, natural gas supplied via pipelines (mainly from Russia) is stored, and as demand goes up in winter, it is released again. In this way, the Inzenham-West storage facility has been and will continue to be a cornerstone of Bavaria’s energy supply. During the extreme cold period in mid-February of this year, the storage facility made a decisive contribution towards securing the natural gas supply and maintaining stability within the network.
With 30 years' experience as operator of the Schechen site, RWE Dea Speicher GmbH has the necessary competences to guarantee the safe and reliable operation of the pore storage facility in the long term.
The Inzenham-West pore storage facility is a former natural gas reservoir that was depleted in the 1970s. The reservoir was subsequently converted into a natural gas storage facility. The gas is stored in an Aquitanian sandstone formation located at a depth ranging from 680 to 880 metres. In the process, the sandstone soaks up the gas like a solid sponge, yet the gas can be released again at any time. As the porous gas storage facility has already proven its tightness over the millions of years in its former existence as a natural gas reservoir, this represents a particularly safe method for storing the gas.
