  • (1888PressRelease) March 04, 2015 - Russia has been supplying nuclear fuel components for the Indian boiling water reactor since 2000. The Tarapur Atomic Power Station (TAPS) is under IAEA safeguards.

The fuel pellets are produced by Elemash, which has long been a reliable partner with TAPS.
As part of cooperation with the Indian Department of Atomic Energy, TVEL also supplies its nuclear fuel for the first and second power units of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant under a life-cycle contract. In addition, the Russian-Indian cooperation extends to shipments of nuclear fuel components as TVEL supplies natural enriched uranium dioxide pellets for the Rajasthan Atomic Power Station (PHWR reactor).
Following 2014, new contracts between TVEL and its foreign partners exceeded USD 3.0 billion, with the 10-year order portfolio maintained at over USD 10.0 billion. In 2014, TVEL signed fuel supply contracts with nuclear power stations in Hungary, Slovakia and Finland, and research reactors in the Netherlands, Czech Republic, and Uzbekistan.

The Indian market is one of the company's priorities and Russia already has partnered with India on nuclear programme for several decades. One of the first agreements concluded by India after the waive of the export-control restrictions in atomic energy by the Group of Nuclear Suppliers was the agreement concluded in 2009 with the TVEL on supplies of 2000 tonnes of uranium dioxide fuel pellets for the Rajasthan NPP. One of the main objects of the bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy field today is the Kudankulam NPP with two VVER-1000 Units of the total capacity amounting to 2000 MW. In 2008-2009, the company delivered the initial fuel batch and the first reloading nuclear fuel batch to the NPP.

TVEL Fuel Company, a subsidiary of Rosatom, was established on 12 September 1996 to comprise a number of nuclear fuel producers, uranium conversion and enrichment companies, gas centrifuge manufacturers, and research and development organizations. The Company is the only fuel supplier for the Russian nuclear power plants. TVEL Fuel Company supplies nuclear fuel to 78 power reactors in 15 countries, research reactors in nine countries, and nuclear-powered ships. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on nuclear fuel produced by TVEL.
