The latest salvo from his "Political Pot Shots With a Strong Backbeat" project, the "Save the Institution" EP is Buchanan at his pissed-off best. Funny and musical - a rare combination.
(1888PressRelease) October 03, 2008 - "Save the Institution!" EP is a hilarious take on same-sex marriage ("Save the Institution: A Gay Marriage Sing-along"), campaign finance reform ("All-American Suckers"), and the current state of the Republican Party ("Save Me From the GOP - They've Gone Completely Mental") with Buchanan's usual wit and musicianship. As Buchanan puts it, "If you weren't a bleeding-heart liberal before listening to my 'Save the Institution,'EP, you still won't be, but you'll know everybody is laughing at you."
Russ Buchanan is a war horse from 70s and 80s bands, "Sugarloaf" ("Green-eyed Lady") "Player" ("Baby Come Back"), "Thieves" (You wouldn't know any of our songs, but we did manage to put the record company out of business), and many others. He has played bass and/or sung on zillions of albums, including Tanya Tucker, Gary Wright, Danny O'Keefe and Exile. His contribution to Hollywood is almost as eclectic as his musical resumé -- from the voice of "Kingfisher," the besotted Cajun DJ from "Candyman, Farewell to the Flesh", to "Elgart Brunson," the hyper-macho country singer in the ill-fated Stallone/Parton flick, "Rhinestone," who sings about his bride-to-be's unfortunate wedding gown/tractor mishap, to the singing voice of "Jacob" in Dreamworks' "Joseph, King of Dreams."
"The Russ Buchanan EP" and the "Save the Institution EP" are the first two salvos from his "Political Potshots With a Strong Backbeat" project -- the result of an aging musico being subjected to eight years of the Bush fiasco.
The "Save the Institution!" EP is available at CD Baby, itunes, and all the usual outlets.
