Rugby ATL Announces Partnership with Life University for Inaugural Season
Major League Rugby team to play home games at Lupo Family Field.
- Atlanta, GA (1888PressRelease) October 08, 2019 - Atlanta’s newest professional sports team Rugby ATL have announced a partnership with Life University to play its home games during its inaugural season at the University’s Lupo Family Field in Marietta. Rugby ATL is the 12th team in the Major League Rugby, the highest level of American Rugby. Lupo Family Field also serves as the home to Life University’s rugby team, one of the top collegiate programs in the country. The school has produced many of the current MLR players.
“We’re launching a team from the ground up in a city that hasn’t seen a professional rugby team and felt that being in an environment that produces championship level rugby would be the ideal home for us,” said Robert Taylor, CEO of Rugby ATL. “We considered many locations and reviewed Atlanta traffic and weekend sporting commitments to find a home field location that we believe ticks all our boxes.”
Rugby is the fastest growing team sport in the country (2015-16) with more than 40 million fans. Data confirms that Atlanta is ready for a professional rugby team with more than 900,000 rugby fans in the city excited about the team’s presence.
"Life has a longstanding rugby tradition and success nationally at the club and collegiate level,” said Dr. Robert Scott, President of Life University. “Combined with our players and coach's involvement in youth rugby in the metro Atlanta area, this partnership with Rugby ATL is a perfect fit for us.”
In April, the franchise signed six players to the Atlanta roster and announced Scott Lawrence as the team’s head coach, who is the current assistant coach for the US Men’s National Rugby union team. Rugby ATL’s home opener at Life University against Utah Warriors is on Feb. 9 at 3pm.
“We’re committed to delivering on our mission of excellence day in and day out, on and off the field,” said Taylor. “We’re building a solid foundation for our team and will support the on-field efforts with a fantastic game-day experience with fan engagement programs.”
Rugby ATL’s southeast regional development team 404 will participate in the Atlantic Rugby Premiership Cup against NYC, Boston and others this fall at Life University. For more information and schedule, visit 404’s website at https://www.404rugby.com.
