Demron™ Full Body Suit is ISO 8194:1987: Radiation Protection - Clothing for protection against radioactive contamination - Design, selection, testing, and use.
Miami, FL (1888PressRelease) February 09, 2012 - Radiation Shield Technologies (RST) today announced its patented Demron-W CBRN Class 2 suit received a key ISO compliance that further solidify its market leadership as the only full-body suit providing anti-nuclear and multi-hazard protection from chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear agents. The suit, made with the Demron technology currently used in the nuclear radiation cleanups following the Fukushima Nuclear Disaster, is noted by governments and first responder organizations worldwide for its unique life-saving benefits.
Specifically, the anti-nuclear Demron-W suit received ISO 8194:1987 compliance for radiation protection clothing that guards against radioactive contamination. Of the comparable Class 2 certified suits, RST's Demron-W suit is the only suit that has proved effective against gamma radiation. Ronald DeMeo, M.D., president and CEO of RST, donated more than 200 Demron Full-Body Suits and Torso Vests to help protect the first responders and nuclear workers in the Fukushima nuclear cleanups. After the introduction and evaluation of RST's technology, RST's suit proved to be the most effective against gamma radiation and has been critical in the ongoing cleanup.
"We have all learned a lot while working with Japanese authorities to donate our life-saving Demron technologies and support the nuclear cleanup efforts," said Dr. DeMeo, the surgeon, entrepreneur and inventor who created Demron. "We're learning that addressing nuclear threats and mitigating the exposure risks is a new science. In the case of Japan, Demron is proving on the field and in tests to be the only technology of its kind to provide the necessary radiation protection. In addition to protecting the workers, Demron is being used in everything from cleaning the soil to lining the equipment."
Kevin Wang, president with PowerPlus Cleaning Solutions, who is leading the radiation cleanup efforts in Japan, echoed Dr. DeMeo's words: "We have tested and measured the protection Demron provides, and Demron is the only gear that we trust one hundred percent to protect our team and equipment for the cleanup process in Japan. Our equipment has registered dangerous radiation levels in zones that Japanese officials had determined were 'clean.' Radiation levels are dangerously high at this point, and without Demron, we would not be able to calibrate our equipment, take accurate readings of radiation levels or safely perform our work. After comparing Demron with other gear available today, it's clear that Demron is the absolute best and only choice because it is the only gear that provides the necessary radiation protection. It's also flexible, lightweight and adaptable for multiple uses. We stand by Demron."
As Demron's exclusive manufacturer, RST has 13 national and international patents for the Demron fabric. Demron is the only protective gear on the market today providing complete multi-hazard protection. This is because the standards, which had been set to address the major chemical and biological threats of the past, had not been updated to address new emerging threats. Therefore, most suits only provided protection from chemical agents, but no protection against nuclear and radiological threats. Moreover, the suits were not designed with an advanced self-cooling fabric like Demron, so they create heat stress when worn, limiting the amount of time they can be used on the field.
Added Dr. DeMeo: "Global authorities must recognize that the growing number of nuclear and other threats today must be addressed, and they must leverage the latest technologies and safety protocols to protect their first responders, military and the general public. The effects of the nuclear disaster in Japan are currently being studied and, while we may not understand all the impacts for some time, we do know that countless men, women and children are being exposed to unsafe levels of radiation that will likely seriously harm their health and the health of their offspring. We also know the nuclear disaster that occurred in Japan could happen anywhere in the world, and our global leaders must be better prepared."
Because RST's Demron-W CBRN Class 2 suit is made from a nano-metal material, the Demron-W suit is the only Class 2 suit that provides any protection against ionizing nuclear and radiological hazards. The most thermal conductive of any suit in its class, it can significantly reduce heat stress by allowing passive cooling. The following video link demonstrates how Demron reduces heat stress: http://www.youtube.com/user/RadiationShieldTec#p/u/6/y5uWZdXWeYI.
The RST Demron-W CBRN Class 2 suit is also differentiated because it weighs fewer than 10 pounds and is designed to increase operational capability by allowing longer operating times in nuclear/radiological environments. The lightweight, self-cooling fabric is the only one that reduces heat stress, enables single-operator front entry and has rugged construction, a proprietary harness system, and multiple points of adjustment for fit customization and comfort.
In addition to RST NFPA 1994-2007 Class 2 and ISO 8194 certification, RST has also been awarded ISO 9001 certification for Quality Management and ISO 13485 certification for Medical Device Quality Management. Demron's other certifications include: National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Class 2 Certification for the 1994-2007 Standard on Protective Ensembles for First Responders to CBRN Terrorism Incidents; ISO 9001:2008; ISO 8194 and ISO 13485:2003; National Institute of Justice (NIJ) 0108.01 Certification for the Demron High Energy Nuclear/Ballistic IED RDD Shield; and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) 0101.06 Certified Ballistic Vest.
RST's personal-protection line includes the full-body suits as well as high-energy anti-nuclear ballistic blankets, medical X-ray aprons, and ballistic vests. RST products are currently deployed throughout the Middle East, Asia, Europe, and the United States in the military, police, fire, and nuclear clean up communities. Notable end-users include the Fire Department of New York (FDNY).
