Royale Hayat Hospital Does Kuwait Proud
Kuwait became the 1st country in the Middle East & Africa region and only the 8th country in the world to have an International Center of Excellence for the surgical treatment of obesity.
- (1888PressRelease) September 27, 2012 - Royale Hayat Hospital has succeeded in putting Kuwait on the map amongst the leading countries in the surgical management of obesity. The hospital received recognition as a Founder International Center of Excellence and its leading surgeon Dr. Osamah Alsanea received the title of founder surgeon of excellence.
The Minister of Health Dr. Ali Al Obeidi visited Royale Hayat Hospital and was presented with the International Center of Excellence certificate.
After an extensive tour of the facilities, he commended the hospital management on its achievements and stated, "Royale Hayat hospital is exceptional in providing health care services and are to be admired for their passion and perseverance to achieve quality and safety".
The center of excellence status is awarded only to hospitals that show commitment to the highest standard of practice in the treatment of obesity and is based on a thorough review of the obesity program and its safety standards as well as its adherence to the international standards of practice in the surgical management of obesity.
Founded in 2009 and the most recent entrant in this field, the Royale Hayat Hospital has emerged as the only hospital in the Middle East & African region to win the coveted status of an International Center of Excellence.
Dr. Osamah AlSanea, Founder Surgeon of Excellence stated, "We have realized from the beginning that we needed to provide solutions to the obesity pandemic especially with the high incidence of diabetes and other illnesses associated with obesity amongst our people in Kuwait. It is a recognized fact today that surgery provides the only durable and reliable cure from obesity and despite the aggressive approach to treat obesity; the World Health Organization (WHO) lists obesity as the leading cause of premature preventable deaths."
Dr. Alsanea further stressed that, "keyhole surgery or laparoscopy has become the standard to treat obesity as it expedites patient recovery and is well tolerated, resulting in exponential growth in the number of surgeries being done. Yet complications may happen and can often be fatal. Hence, a decade ago the United States government mandated safety standards and established an accreditation program to qualify hospitals and surgeons to do obesity surgery using laparoscopy. We at the Royale Hayat consider safety of our patients as the first priority, hence we felt obligated to provide the maximum guarantees for our patients by the voluntary adoption of all international standards. That is why we chose to be pioneers in seeking accreditation from the leading organization in the world."
The Royale Hayat Obesity program takes a holistic approach to obesity and provides optimal support and follow up for our patients for a minimum of 5 years not only to guarantee that they lose weight but also to ensure they achieve the weight loss while promoting their physical well being both from a functional and an appearance perspective in addition to their emotional well being. The hospital also provides significant nutritional support to correct any possible deficiencies in vitamins and minerals and its internists provide assistance to patients as they get rid of their medications for all associated illnesses that patients are expected to be cured from.
Dr. Osamah Alsanea expressed his happiness over the news and stated that it was a collaborative effort of a large team including his partners Dr. Wissam Fakih and Dr. Hussein Faour and other physicians in association with Ms. Sheila Hill, Chief Nursing Officer and her entire team who were instrumental in obtaining this status. Dr. Alsanea also commended Ms. Sahar Nasser Eddine the program coordinator for keeping everybody engaged especially patients. Ms. Nasser Eddine has been instrumental in building momentum for the program and establishing a comprehensive nutrition service as a part of post-operative care and follow up.
Dr. Wissam Fakih talked about his involvement with Dr. Osamah Al Sanea from the inception of the Royale Hayat program and was proud to state that, "in our journey towards accreditation, we have achieved many milestones and addressed a wide range of surgical challenges while delivering high quality outcomes. A major portion of our surgical volume has consisted of complex re-do cases to treat surgical failures and we also pioneered in the introduction of scar-less single port surgery. As a result of our achievements we have emerged as the first port of call for high risk patients."
Dr. Hussein Faour stressed on the rigorous process in obtaining the certification, "the requirements for obtaining the ICE accreditation are very comprehensive, research-based and verified through a rigorous site inspection. We worked hard for a over a year to plan for and meet every single criteria, invested in equipments and instruments, established clinical pathways and Standardized Operating Procedures and extensively trained our Bariatric Nurses, Physician extenders and the program coordinator. Our compliance with accreditation standards enabled us to receive referrals of patients with significant morbidities who under normal circumstances would not be treated elsewhere in Kuwait. We are proud to have provided such high standard of care."
Dr. Neil Hatcher, the past-president of the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery and CEO of the Surgical Review Corporation visited the program in Kuwait and spent days checking compliance with all standards and requirements. He interviewed members of management, clinical staff and ancillary support staff as well as patients. He observed, "I have not seen records as comprehensive as those at the Royale Hayat through my many years of auditing programs internationally and I thank the Royale Hayat management and clinical team for their commitment to international standards."
Captain Jalal AbuKhalaf, the first male patient to undergo bariatric surgery at Royale Hayat and head of Royale Hayat's patient support group said in a statement that he was happy to participate as a patient in the accreditation process and has witnessed the positive progress in the program with each visit. He also appreciated the support that the team offered him even as he underwent body lift surgeries to get rid of excess skin. He found the literature he received from the program during his visits and through the regular patient support group meetings helpful and hoped it can be freely distributed to all obesity patients in Kuwait.
Dr. Bader Alzaid Altraiji, Deputy CEO of Royale Hayat Hospital expressed his delight over receiving this prestigious status from the Surgical Review Corporation in association with the American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, "We are ecstatic to see Kuwait listed on the official website of the Surgical Review Corporation as the eighth country in the world and to see the name of Royale Hayat among leading hospitals in the world and the name of Dr. Osamah Alsanea, our surgeon among a select group of founder surgeons of excellence."
Mr. Sanjay Gautam, Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer of the Royale Hayat emphasized the holistic nature of the program and the hospital's efforts to tie-in various partnerships that make it easier for patients to receive treatment and post operative care. "We are pleased to cooperate with Boubyan Bank; one of the largest Islamic banks in Kuwait to bring our patients zero interest healthcare financing to help them undergo a life altering surgery. Our partnership with Diet Center, the leading diet company in the region provides our Bariatric patients a full program to meet their nutritional needs after the surgery and maximize the long term success of weight loss."
