Design-Build Institute of America Singles Out Mineta San Jose International Airport Terminal Renovation Project as Best in Class.
- (1888PressRelease) October 28, 2011 - SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Rosendin Electric (http://www.rosendin.com), the nation's largest private electrical contractor and a 100% employee-owned company, has received a 2011 National Design-Build Award in Transportation from the Design-Build Institute of America in recognition for their work as a Specialty Contractor in the Mineta San Jose International Airport renovation project. The award was announced last week at the 2011 Design-Build Conference & Expo held in Orlando, Florida.
Rosendin Electric was responsible for installing new 12-kilovolt power systems for Terminal A, Terminal B, and the consolidated rent-a-car facility (ConRAC), a new security system, a new baggage handling system, telecommunications, a security camera system, and lighting controls. The contract also included all the emergency life safety power systems, a new campus-wide fire alarm system, energy efficient LED lighting in the existing Terminal A garage, traffic controls systems for the airport roadway, new passenger security check points, and new passenger boarding bridges. Rosendin Electric also installed more than 40,000 LED lights that can be programmed to provide a variety of lighting themes in a new meeter greeter area in Terminal A, where people can wait for arriving passengers. The new Terminal B Concourse received LEEDŽ Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for sustainability features such as occupancy lighting sensors, a programmable lighting control system, and "smart" heating and cooling systems.
The $1.3 billion San Jose International Airport project featured more than $100 million in electrical work, which included construction of the new 1.8 million square-foot ConRAC and installation of the 1.12 megawatt photovoltaic (PV) solar system on the parking garage roof. At various project milestones, Rosendin Electric had more than 120 union electricians employed, with an average of 250,000 man hours.
To be considered for a National Design-Build Award, a project must demonstrate the successful application of design-build best practices as defined by the DBIA Design-Build Manual of Practice. Best practices include early integration of key team members during the proposal process via a proposal charrette or other collaborative outreach effort, as well as close coordination between design and construction team members from the design development stage through field construction.
