Love Is Strong as Death: Our Walk through the Valley of Its Shadows
No one plans to die when their lives are in full bloom, and nothing in Rick and Nancy Fleeter's twenty-five years together prepared them to face her death-the ultimate personal and at the same time universal human experience.
Dr. Rick Fleeter is a rocket scientist; his wife Nancy Fleeter managed arts organizations, including the American Ballet Theatre and the John F. Kennedy Center. They enjoyed two more-than-full lives despite living with her cancer for over fifteen years. By every measure they thrived as young, successful professionals and as a close and loving couple.
Nothing prepared them for dealing with the cancer's accelerating aggressiveness as it consumed her body despite her doctors' multiple efforts to combat it. Love Is Strong as Death, a book they began writing together and that Rick finished alone, offers a window into how two lay persons dealt with illness and death and the struggle to rebuild one life where once there were two.
Love Is Strong as Death is not advice, and it not a romance. Written "from behind enemy lines," as Rick puts it, this book personalizes grief, resourcefulness, and fulfillment from the point of view of a highly-trained scientist and a free-spirited, artistic MBA forced to grapple with emotions and circumstances more powerful than anything they could have imagined.
