Rising Country Star Summerlyn Powers Teams Up With "Guitars Not Guns"
Organization Helps At Risk Youth Channel Their Talents Through Music Education And Empowerment.
- Mobile, AL (1888PressRelease) October 09, 2015 - At only 14 years old, rising country star Summerlyn Powers is showing the world that even the smallest among us can make a difference. Teaming up with Guitars Not Guns, Powers is using her music to make a difference.
Guitars Not Guns seeks to turn around the lives of foster kids and at-risk youth ages 8-18 by teaching them to express themselves through music instead of violence. The entirely volunteer-run organization has been providing guitars and lessons to children in need for the past 15 years.
Guitars Not Guns believes music has the power to heal even the most broken. By offering free guitars and lessons to children in need, they provide much more than just music - they provide security, empowerment, creativity and mentorship.
"Using music as a catalyst, we encourage children and teens to foster personal development and to help divert them from the destructive influences of drugs, alcohol and gang-related violence," said Guitars Not Guns of the program.
Powers heard about the group and was anxious to get involved. She traveled 40 minutes from her hometown of Fairhope, AL in order to teach a class at the non-profit's Foley, AL chapter.
The youngest to ever teach guitar there, Powers was able to exert an especially powerful influence on her students.
"Her guidance with the students has been tremendous due to her proximity in age and her ability to teach them guitar the way she was taught," said Foley, AL Guitars Not Guns Chapter President Reggie C. Pulliam. "Additionally, her musically capabilities at such a young age serve as an inspiration for the young students in the classes as they too hope to emulate Summerlyn in the near future."
Powers is assisting Pulliam in starting a chapter in Fairhope, AL and she will be volunteering on a weekly basis once launched.
"Guitars Not Guns is lucky to have such a kind and generous person who volunteers her time to assist those less fortunate," said Pulliam of Powers' continuing involvement with the organization.
Expect details on the new chapter's progress soon.
