- (1888PressRelease) June 23, 2011 - LEESBURG, Va. - RHT Consulting, a leading provider of strategy consulting services in the Life Sciences industry, has developed a market segmentation analysis for infectious disease, a global market expected to reach $138 billion in 2014. RHT Consulting and Hult International Business School students performed in-depth research of more than 230 individual infectious diseases. The project focus was to analyze the infectious disease market and determine which markets had the greatest potential opportunity for a new drug, vaccine or biomarker.
The analysis also evaluated how demand for newer pharmaceutical treatments in the infectious disease market is being shaped by factors such as population growth, increased awareness, improved diagnostics, and drug innovation. However, due to misdiagnosis, lack of information and lack of patient accessibility in developing countries, inaccuracies in incidence and prevalence rates exist, making it difficult for pharmaceutical companies to properly forecast the volume of effective drugs necessary for these areas, as well as design treatments to best serve these specific markets. Even in cases where a proper diagnosis occurs, accessibility to such treatments remains a key obstacle due to weak economic and political infrastructures, hard to reach locations, and high costs for those affected in the bottom 1/3 of the world's population.
The team was led by Rosemarie Truman of RHT Consulting and was comprised of six international students from Hult: Jana Schumann, Ashley Mount, Francisco Cortés Muñoz, Eromosele Ighalo, Markus Jirman and Lissa Regets.
"There are significant opportunities within the infectious disease market in developing countries," said Jana Schumann, project team lead and Hult Master candidate. "However, many of these opportunities can only be addressed minimally at present given the lack of infrastructure as accessibility to effective treatments remains difficult. In addition, proper education and tools are required to prevent the all too common misdiagnoses. If nothing changes, there will not be any significant improvements in the unfortunate health situation for individuals affected by such diseases."
"Currently infectious disease drugs constitute approximately 11 percent of all drug sales and remain one of the largest concerns in global health," said Rosemarie Truman, Founder and CEO of RHT Consulting. "The initial infectious disease analysis performed by RHT Consulting and Hult provided insights into this largely underserved market. We believe our final analysis will benefit Life Sciences organizations, the patients who require proper treatment options as well as governmental organizations that need more fact-based analysis with regards to patient needs."
Observations from the infectious disease market segmentation project will be published in a whitepaper at a later date in 2011.
