  • (1888PressRelease) December 14, 2024 - SGS, the world’s leading testing, inspection and certification company, has published SafeGuardS 167.24 on revisions to Canada’s Tents Regulations (SOR/2024-217), which includes consequential amendments to both the Toys Regulations and the Textile Flammability Regulations.

SOR/2024-217 addresses the flammability hazards found in different types of tent materials sold on the market, aiming to reduce the need for manufacturers to use potentially harmful flame-retardant chemicals in their products to comply with fire safety regulations. It brings the Tents Regulations in line with CAN/CGSB-182.1-2020 (Flammability and Labelling Requirements for Tents).

Published on November 20, 2024, by Health Canada under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, the new regulations include the following definition of a ‘tent’ as a structure that meets the following conditions:

    a. Portable
    b. Intended to shelter persons from outdoor environmental elements such as precipitation, sun, wind or insects
    c. Made, in whole or in part, of fabric or other pliable material
    d. Has a top
    e. At least one side constrains egress
    f. Not subject to the National Building Code of Canada 2020, published by the Canadian Commission on Building and Fire Codes, National Research Council of Canada

The updated Toys Regulations align with ISO 8124-2:2014 Safety of Toys – Part 2: Flammability and include specific fire safety labeling requirements for toys intended to be entered by a child. Related Textile Flammability Regulations have been amended to exclude toys intended to be entered by a child.

A transitional period of two years following the November 20, 2024, enforcement date of the new Tents Regulations and amended Toys Regulations has been included, allowing manufacturers to use up previously compliant stock.

SGS experts publish SafeGuardS to keep stakeholders informed about regulatory changes that could impact their business. SafeGuardS 167.24 also includes further information about specific updates to the new Tents Regulations and the Toys Regulation, as well as links to the new legislation and related amendments.

Stakeholders are encouraged to refer to the original SafeGuardS 167.24 for more details.
