Reviewers Sought for Final SWEBOK Guide Knowledge Areas and Standards Appendix
The IEEE Computer Society is seeking public review comments for three newly available sections of Version 3 of the Guide to the Software Engineering Body of Knowledge (SWEBOK V3) as well as an Appendix on Standards applicable to the entire Guide. These are the final sections of SWEBOK V3 remaining to be reviewed.
- Cincinnati, OH-KY-IN (1888PressRelease) June 11, 2013 - The SWEBOK Guide spells out components of the software engineering discipline, promoting a consistent view of software engineering worldwide. The guide clarifies software engineering's place compared to other disciplines.
The IEEE Computer Society's two software development certifications-the Certified Software Development Associate (CSDA) for entry-level developers and the Certified Software Development Professional (CSDP) credential for mid-career professionals are both based on the SWEBOK Guide. The CSDA and the CSDP are the first two certifications that conform to the ISO/IEC 24773 standard, which stipulates methods of certifying software engineering professionals worldwide.
Most IEEE Computer Society training materials and curriculum development also use the SWEBOK Guide as a foundation. The Guide is also known as Technical Report ISO/IEC TR 19759.
The newest version of the SWEBOK Guide includes new topic areas, updated topic descriptions, and retirement of topics that are no longer relevant. Five new knowledge areas (KAs) provide a guide to foundational knowledge in software engineering.
The new guide will feature better integration of the related disciplines, and renaming and distribution of some material into different knowledge areas.
Software practitioners worldwide participate in the Guide's development to ensure that it captures established traditional practices recommended by many organizations. The SWEBOK Guide uses a rigorous process that includes successive levels of review. Three knowledge areas (KAs) are now available for review: Software Engineering Process, Software Quality, and Engineering Foundations. In addition, an Appendix on Standards is also available for public review comments.
Each of the 15 KAs will be made public as they become available for review. To review the three new knowledge areas and the appendix, go to http://computer.centraldesktop.com/swebokv3review/.
Reviewers should read the review instructions and enter their review comments along with the requested information (see the right column of the review site).
The deadline for review comments on these areas is 30 June 2013. For more information, contact Dick Fairley, chair of the SWEBOK V3 Change Control Board, at d.fairley ( @ ) computer dot org dot
Twelve of the SWEBOK V3 KAs have been reviewed so far, and the review period for those areas is closed. Copies of those KAs are available at the review Web site, and the KA editors are resolving the public review comments. Resolution of submitted comments for all KAs will be displayed on the SWEBOK V3 Web site as they become available. All review comments, as well the names and countries of the reviewers providing the comments, will be made public. Email addresses, affiliations, and other identifying information of reviewers will not be made public.
