Former Washington Redskins linebacker, Kenneth (Ken) Harvey, knows what some current players are learning during the NFL lockout, and that is to have profitable interests off of the playing field. Twelve years after he left the game, Harvey is enjoying a life of entrepreneurship and writing with the debut of Xavier: A Hero No More, his first novel.
The novel's main character Xavier is an ex-NFL football player who kills two elderly people in a car accident. By all rights he is guilty except that he does not remember a thing. His story goes from bad to worse as he ends up in jail and then fighting for his life. Charles is a detective who at one time idolized Xavier as a player and his gut feeling tells him that there is more to the case than meets the eye. As Charles
struggles to put the pieces together in Xavier's life, his life falls apart. Proving Xavier's innocence in a way helps him to believe that there are still heroes, and perhaps even he may be considered one.
On the surface Xavier appears to be a story straight out of today's headlines. However, Harvey sees it differently. He says, "Xavier offers a more dimensional image of the professional athlete, hopefully a less stereotypical one." The fourtime nominee to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, who is also one of the Redskins' 70 Greatest Players, believes that his story demonstrates some of the struggles players have after leaving the game.
"There's also a spiritual message embedded in the thriller and that is bad things happen to good people. And sometimes those good people are ex-football players."
