Renewed focus on Midwifery and Antenatal care in UAE clinics and hospitals
Dubai-based Midwifery Conference to address best practices in ante-and-post natal care across the Middle East.
- (1888PressRelease) February 13, 2013 - Dubai, UAE - Midwives are healthcare providers who offer care to childbearing women during pregnancy, labor and birth, and during the postpartum period. They also help care for the newborn child and assist the mother with breastfeeding. Antenatal care is very important as often a pregnant woman will have no signs or symptoms of complications that may affect her or her baby. Although postnatal care is very limited here in the UAE, it is very important, as a midwife can help with bonding, breastfeeding and psychological support.
The Midwifery Conference will take place on the 31 March-2 April 2013 as part of the Obs-Gyne Exhibition & Congress (OBS-GYNE 2013) at the Dubai International Convention & Exhibition Centre, UAE. Organised by Informa Life Sciences Exhibitions, this will witness the largest gathering of obstetricians and gynaecologists in the Middle East. The endeavor aims to keep midwives, both in the UAE and larger region, updated on the latest technologies and medical advancements in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. Alongside the Midwifery Conference, OBS-GYNE 2013 also hosts programmes on Obstetrics and Gynecology, Women's health, and new for this year, Neonatology.
According to Dr. Grace Edwards, Assistant Director of Nursing and Midwifery, Corniche Hospital, Abu Dhabi, and Chair of the Midwifery Conference: "Although the midwife is an expert in normal birth she is also trained to identify when pregnancy is complicated and work in partnership with her medical colleagues."
There are lots of new developments around midwifery in the UAE. Midwives are now being trained locally and the Corniche Hospital's third 18-month Bachelor of Applied Science in Midwifery program is now in progress. The first course graduated three of the first ever locally trained Emirati midwives.
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is now well established and has just produced the new scopes of practice for nurses and midwives based on the best international evidence; also, the Midwives section of the Emirates Nursing Association is in constant growth. As a member of the steering group for Regulation & Licensing at NMC, Dr. Edwards elaborates on the importance of the Midwifery Conference at OBS-GYNE 2013.
"This conference is extremely important, especially for midwives, as they are able to hear about the latest initiatives and developments in the field, network with other midwives and gain insight into how they can change practice based on the best available evidence and share their ideas."
A recent report published by the United Nations stated that 'Increasing women's access to quality midwifery services has become a focus of global efforts to realize the right of every woman to the best possible health care during pregnancy and childbirth.' (UNFPA 2011)
"Antenatal care is deemed essential and contributes to decreasing maternal and infant mortality in the region; the main objectives for antenatal care are to guarantee a healthy outcome for mothers and newborns, and prevent complications that may develop," says Wafa Saeed, Registered Midwife at Dubai Hospital, UAE, and speaker at the Midwifery Conference in March.
Running alongside the conference is an exhibition with more than 35 exhibiting companies from 10 countries showcasing healthcare technology and innovation from across the obs-gyne medical sector. Top exhibiting companies include industry giants such GlaxoSmithKline, Bayer Healthcare, Philips, GE Healthcare, STORZ, and the American Hospital Dubai.
