  • (1888PressRelease) August 06, 2011 - Recruitment firms may be eyeing the latest headlines about the UK jobs market with some concern. The numbers claiming state unemployment benefits soared this May, with many experts predicting an employment down turn was now inevitable. Figures remained high in June, yet recruitment software experts Recruitleads argue that recruitment firms can still perform well despite the predictions.

Although the International Labour Organisation measure for unemployment, showed that unemployment fell in the three months up to June, other experts have nonetheless raised concerns. From April to June, UK unemployment fell by 26,000 according to this measure ; the national rate was pegged at 7.7%. Yet analysing the actual number of UK unemployment benefit claims from May to June produces an entirely different picture. From an initial 26,000, the number has rocketed to 1.52 million, representing an unprecedented increase during the last 2 years. The Office of National Statistics has officially argued the figures simply reflect the number of female single parents now included in the workforce figures.
They say the rise is a blip resulting from implementation of the Government's new benefit policies. Nonetheless, other analysts point instead to difficult job market conditions. The Chief Economic Adviser at the Institute of Personnel and Development (IPD) has also sounded warnings about the latest ONS figures. The number of job vacancies has been estimated to have dropped by 7,000 already between the first and second quarters this year. Growth in the number of candidates onboarded into permanent jobs has also been flagged for concern. By June, it was standing at its lowest level for 22 months.

"There are substantially differing perspectives about the likely health of the UK jobs market right now. It's vital that recruitment agencies are able to quickly generate leads, and suitable leads at that. It could be the case that jobs are simply not being effectively advertised, meaning recruitment firms are not finding them in time, or not finding them at all. The situation could be exacerbated by poorly performing search and administration facilities with these companies. If you ensure your systems are fully optimal, you're going to find the cream of the crop faster than your competitors, "said a spokesman from Recruitleads, The Recruitment Software Company.

The IPD also noted concerns about underrepresentation of younger candidates within the ONS figures. Youth unemployment appeared to have fallen recently, however the figures again require careful interpretation. An apparent fall of 42,000 has been attributed to 16 to 24 year olds leaving the full time jobs market altogether to enter full time education instead. Online recruitment may be particularly important in regard to this technologically empowered generation. It is certainly fast becoming a standard primary technique used by firms both small and large. Nonetheless, the numbers within this age group who actually took up a new, full time position showed no significant increase at all this last quarter.
