Recruiters and Employers: Could Capitalise On Public Sector Skills

  • (1888PressRelease) January 12, 2012 - The Office for Budget Responsibility (OBR) had originally predicted continuing Government austerity measures would mean 600,000 UK public sector jobs were to be lost. However, the latest data from the OBR indicates the figure could be as high as over 700,000. Many workers will inevitably now be seeking to join the private sector, with some 276,000 public sector jobs already lost during 2011.

Following the original prediction of 60,000 job cuts, the figures have been revised to include a further 3,100 job losses by 2016. It is not currently clear where and when the job cuts will occur, in which sectors and which locations. The scale of the cuts means that public sector workers will inevitably apply for private sector jobs in ever increasing numbers. The Government's own prediction was that there will be 1.7 million new jobs created in the private sector by 2017. Many councils are now supporting ex-workers to make the transition from the public to the private sector by providing support services to help ex-workers find new employment. These include in-house advice on job-hunting techniques, interview skills and accessing online training tools. Some are going a step further to provided dedicated Outsourcing services which aim to provide both practical and emotional support during jobseeking and potentially a transition to a totally new sector. These can include one to one coaching, workshops, access to online resources and support for those considering self-employment.

Many employers have found ex-public sector workers to be valuable assets to their company, bringing with them a wealth of experience of working in cost-sensitive environments. Delivering services within existing resources and ultimately on budget could prove to be a desirable transferrable skill for a very wide range of industries. Some 'frontline' workers may have been used to providing services in challenging conditions, routinely coping well with the public, colleagues and management needs under pressure. Other staff may be highly skilled within accounting, for example, combined with a strong sense of team-working and solid customer service skills.

"Many public sector employees have a range of skills that are actually an ideal match for the private sector. Their awareness of working within resource limitations is a particularly strong example. Customer service skills could also be a plus. There are often roles which have demanded a complete skills set: a specialism in one area combined with more universal abilities. If recruiters can quickly and efficiently process the high volume of data, they are going to be in a position to match some tremendously multi-skilled candidates to vacancies"
